Why are transformers important to the safe and efficient distribution of electrical energy?

鈥働ower generating facilities are often very large distances from the end users.

鈥僒ransmission lines are used to transfer this electrical energy from one location

鈥僼o another. Losses in energy are mostly due to the current in the lines (wires)

鈥僡nd not the transmission voltage:

鈥冣€冣€働ower Losses = i虏 鈥?R

鈥僿here鈥僫 = the electrical current through the transmission lines

鈥冣€娾€娾€娾€娾€奱nd鈥冣€娾€奟 = the resistance to current flow in the transmission lines

鈥僒o transfer a fixed amount of electrical power, the voltage %26amp; current product is fixed:

鈥冣€冣€冣€冣€冣€働ower = V 鈥?i

鈥僺ince losses are more a function of the current or "i", you can see that

鈥僫t is desireable to transmit the power at the lowest possible current (and the

鈥僣onsequently the highest possible voltage).

鈥僡-c power can easily be "transformed" using transformers which can step-up

鈥僼he voltage (and simultaneously step-down the current duing the transmission

鈥僷hase). The V 鈥?i product is the same at the transformer input and output.

鈥僁ue to the extreme danger of people being around high-voltage a-c power,

鈥僼he voltage is stepped-down to a safe value (120 Vac) by the time it reaches

鈥僪omes. You may have noticed one of the many transformers, used for

鈥僺tepping-down this lethal voltage level, on a pole outside your home.

鈥僕ithout transformers this conflict between energy loss and personal safety

鈥僿ould be a very serious problem. In fact this is the fundamental reason why

鈥僡-c power and not d-c power is used. Transformers don't work using d-c.Why are transformers important to the safe and efficient distribution of electrical energy? As electricity passes through the electrical wires on its way to people's homes, it loses some of its power. The transformers give the electricity a boost (so to speak) and allow it to reach its destination with the same potency with which it originally began. Without transformers, we would receive such a weakened current that many of our appliances simply would not function. Conversely, a transformer may also be used if the original current is too powerful. This type of transformer will reduce the power of the current making it usable. Why are transformers important to the safe and efficient distribution of electrical energy?Because Optimus Prime is the leader of the Autobots.
