Why Autotransformers are not used as conventional transformers?

We have seen autotransformer is shorter in size as well as cheap in construction. why is it not used as normal transformer such as in distribution transfer, or unit or substation transfer. why electrical isolation is required. Why Autotransformers are not used as conventional transformers?Auto transformers ARE used when the voltage ratio is about 2:1 and circuit isolation is not required. They are rare, I grant you, in transmission and distribution, but I have seen at least one.

-Why Autotransformers are not used as conventional transformers? They obviously are less expensive. Auto transformers make only sense when the transformation ratio is anywhere between 1:2. If larger, then, savings are not as significant, but insulation and short circuit currents become an issue.

The Deceptransformers have a monopoly on the industry.
